Jordi returned to the barn to refine the half-model. Jordi was pleased
to see his father so passionately involved with imagining their boat
because he spoke less often about the war in Europe. Jordi hoped the half-model had magical power that would keep
his father from going to war. He watched his father fair the lines until the model was
pleasing from every angle. Then Gil sanded the half model smooth and, each day for
the following week, applied a coat of tung oil until it gleamed
softly, the light breathing life into its
